 PARTS OF THE FLOWER
Male Parts

• Stamen
  This is the male part of the flower. It is made up of the filament and anther, it is the pollen producing part of the plant. The number of stamen is usually the same as the number of petals.
• Anther
  This is the part of the stamen that produces and contains pollen. It is usually on top of a long stalk that looks like a fine hair.
• Filament
  This is the fine hair-like stalk that the anther sits on top of.

Female Parts

• 
  Pistil
  This is the female part of the flower. It is made up of the stigma, style, and ovary. Each pistil is constructed of one to many rolled leaflike structures.
• Stigma
  One of the female parts of the flower. It is the sticky bulb that you see in the center of the flowers, it is the part of the pistil of a flower which receives the pollen grains and on which they germinate.
• Style
  Another female part of the flower. This is the long stalk that the stigma sits on top of.
• Ovary
  The part of the plant, usually at the bottom of the flower, that has the seeds inside and turns into the fruit that we eat. The ovary contains ovules.
• Ovule
  The part of the ovary that becomes the seeds.

Other Important Parts of a Flower

• Petal
  The colorful, often bright part of the flower. They attract pollinators and are usually the reason why we buy and enjoy flowers.
• Sepal
  The parts that look like little green leaves that cover the outside of a flower bud to protect the flower before it opens.

Flower Types

• Imperfect Flower
  A flower that has either all male parts or all female parts, but not both in the same flower. Examples: cucumbers, pumpkin, and melons.
• Perfect Flower
  A flower that has both the male parts and female parts in the same flower. Examples: roses, lilies, and dandelion.

ABS-CBN's Sol Aragones guns for congress seat

MANILA, Philippine – ABS-CBN News journalist Marisol “Sol” Aragones will be running for congresswoman of Laguna's 3rd district in the upcoming 2013 mid-term elections.
The 34-year-old Aragones will run under the ticket of the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) against incumbent Congresswoman Ma. Evita Arago.
Aragones, a TV Patrol reporter and dzMM radio anchor, has been with ABS-CBN for 13 years.
Last Sunday, Aragones bade goodbye to health program “Salamat Dok," where she has been a segment host for more than a year.
“Hindi naman nalalayo ang mundong aking pupuntahan sa mundong mayroon tayo ngayon. Ako po ay sandali munang babalik sa aming bayan para magserbisyo sa aking mga kababayan,” she said.
Among the ABS-CBN journalists who are holding or have held local and congressional posts include Mon Ilagan (Cainta); Angelo Palmones (Agham party); Gilbert Remulla (Cavite); Cesar Soriano (Siocon).
TV Patrol anchor Noli de Castro became senator and vice-president. Former World Tonight anchor Senator Loren Legarda is running for another term in 2013.

The Basic Parts of a Hardback Textbook

    Previewing your textbook before reading it is simply one of the smartest things you can do.  You may be surprised by the helpful efforts made by the author of your textbook.  Nowadays, smart writers want the text, and especially its content, to meet your learning style.  If you only turned to the assigned readings, you are likely to miss the bonuses installed in the book to make the readings more manageable.  First, and foremost, you need to know the basic parts of your textbook.

Book Types

There are three types of books used in academia:

Browsing books which are designed to first "catch the reader's eye," then allow for sporadic, disconnected readings.  The reader "browses" the subject for purposes of intellectual curiosity.
Continuous reading books are typical of traditional textbooks.   They are designed to inform in a systematic manner and generally begin by introducing concepts and continue on to more involved or complex discussions.
Reference books must be designed for easy retrieval of particular information.  

    The following lists the general contents of college textbooks.  Sometimes the order of the listed areas will vary.  Your job is to know where and what it is in your specific books.

Fly leaf (fly page)

This page faces the endsheet (which is glued to the book cover).  This page is thicker and far more durable than the other pages in your book.  Usually blank, this page is excellent for writing down basic formulas or fundamental notes which you will need again and again as you study from the book.

Title/Author page

The information on this page is fairly consistent.  It contains the full title of the book, the edition, the name of the author, the author's academic affiliation (where the author was teacher when the book was written), and the book's publisher.   If there is more than one author, all their names will appear on this page.

Copyright page

The book's copyright information is located prominently on this page.  Copyright indicates the intellectual ownership of the book's content.  There is often a paragraph explain who has the legal right to copy pages from the book.  You will also find the Library of Congress call number, the International Standard Book Number (ISBN).

Preface

The preface is an introductory statement written by the author or authors specifically to the reader.  The preface gives the author's reason and purpose for writing the book, and may include a summary of problems encountered while writing the book.  The preface also attempts to describe the reader; for whom the book is meant.  This should not be confused with the foreward.  The foreward (sometimes spelled forward)  contains remarks about the book, usually written by someone other than the author.  

Introduction

The introduction, like the preface, is by the author. However, here the author tells the reader what the book is about and how it should or might be used. For example, the author might indicate that experienced readers should begin with section two or that it is better to read the work through before attempting the exercises.  If this is a second or subsequent edition, this where the author explains the changes and improvements.

Acknowledgements

This page, when it is included, is meant for the friends, family and colleagues of the author(s).  This section is usually comprised of a paragraph thanking various people for their assistance, contribution and time in helping with the writing and publishing of the book.

Table of Contents

Basically an outline of the book, the table  of contents lists the book's organization.  This section demonstrates if the book is written in chapters, sections or units.  Nowadays there may be two tables of contents; a brief and an expanded.  The expanded is comprehensive and may breakdown the organization of the chapters.  Essentially, the table of contents lists all the content focused text of the book.

Index

The index is a thoughtful list of words and topics taken from the text of the book.  Written in alphabetical order, and organized so that it also reflects sub-topics, the index gives you an idea of the book's subject matter.  Each word is followed by the page or multiple page numbers of every instance the word (or topic) appears in a meaningful context.

Credits

Textbooks often contain photographs, illustrations, visual aids (graphs, charts, tables, etc.) and other specifically designed non text material.  These images were all created by someone, probably other than the author(s).  The credits page lists the artists, photographers, designers and creators of the book's visuals.  The visuals are considered intellectual property and ownership must be documented; that is the purpose of the credits page... a documentation of intellectual property rights for the book's non-text media.

Glossary

The glossary is a small dictionary designed specifically from the words or key terms used in the textbook.  The definitions are only for the specialized usage in the book.  Listed in alphabetical order, each entry  is called a gloss.  There is no set standard for how thorough the definition should be so some glossaries include pronunciation and the pages where the gloss is found in the text.  Other glossaries only give the definition.

Appendix

Some textbooks have more than one appendix (plural appendixes or appendices) depending on the book's discipline.  An appendix is a page or pages that contain a variety of information that is related to the book's topic, but not relegated to one specific chapter.  For example, history books will often have maps and copies of important charters or treaties in appendixes.  Math books will have a table of logarithms, and chemistry books contain the periodic table and other material.

References

Even though one, two or more authors write a textbook, the author does not make up the text.  The information comes from many other places... called sources.  A textbook author must list all of the books, articles, recordings, and other printed sources, that were used in the writing of the textbook.  Whenever the author repeats or borrows from a source, and writes that information in the textbook, the  original title and author of the source is listed in a section called references.

Bibliography

Authors read tremendous amounts of material when writing textbooks.  The bibliography is a list of all the material read, that the author learned from, or contributed to his own ideas that are written in the book.  Unlike the references, the bibliography does list  works that were cited directly by the author.

Top 10 Outdoor Games for Kids

To those kids of this generation who have not yet experienced the joy of playing around with other kids in their neighborhood by doing physical, and fun-filled outdoor kids’ games,  they still have the time to take advantage of the joy that they could get out of it. Despite of the modern gadgets available that you could simply click on, and presto you could select any games installed in your PCs at home or other tablets, the classic and traditional games will let kids of this generation mingle and experience being a kid. Your parents might be familiar in one of the Top 10 Outdoor Games for Kids since breakthrough happened at the end of the 19^th century, while approaching the 20^th century. Kids should not stay inside their room and face the television, or hold a new gadget just to ensure safety, they also need to move around, mingle with other kids, and develop social interaction through outdoor games. In fact, it’s recommended by majority of the health experts for them to grow healthy, burn out calories, and to strengthen their body especially the limbs and muscles.

  
10. Hopscotch

You could use a sidewalk chalk if you are going to play on a cemented surface or a stick that you could use to draw lines on soil or land surface. Another option is water which can be good both for soil or cemented surface. All you need to do is to make or create hopscotch grid and it’s about 9 squares. There are small squares and larger ones. It is typically played by two people, but it can be arranged up to four persons or group scoring. Each player should have a stone or rock that would be used for tossing. The tossing will start on the first grid until it has reached the last grid, but it’s a take turns set-up if one loses on the first throw, the opportunity will be given to the opponent. The rule is you have to hop with a single foot or use both feet which depends on the hopscotch pattern based on the grid.

9. Frisbee Tower

This is a very simple game, but it requires focus, and intellectual ability. You would need mini Frisbee, or if you have toothpicks or any bunch of sticks which is equal to the size of toothpicks, it will be sufficient. Hence, you will enjoy the actual Frisbee itself if you bought one. You just have to divide the stick among the players; it could be played by 2s or even by 3s or 4s. The first player would place his or her first Frisbee in the middle of the ground, and succeeding players would place his or her on top of it until the tower topple.

8. Blind Walk

This is a very simple game and its very popular game at school and especially during the weekend where kids could play with their playmates before the dawn or early morning. An obstacle path will be created, and kids would line-up, and one at time each kid would have his or her turn by being blindfolded, and would have to walk on the straight path without looking.  A scoreboard will be used to record the time of each player.

7. Freeze Tag

It can be played in a small or large group, and it’s actually a variation of a simple tag game. Wherein if the person who is “it” tags you, you stop moving, and you’ll stay on the place where you were froze. Hence, another player in the group has the power to unfreeze you so you may continue running away from the person who may freeze tag you.

6. Tag

A group of kids will gather as one, and would decide who would play as being “it” who has the power to tag others. The choosing can be done either by volunteering, or the typical way of starting the game. Once settled, the game start by chasing the people around who is next to you, once chased and tagged, that person will be the next who would play “it”. It’s up to you if you would want to include in your rules the no-tag-backs, or just continue doing the typical set-up. The game will be finished, once everyone feels tired.

5. Jump-Rope and Double Dutch

This is the favorite recess game for girls although there are boys who are participating, but since it’s mostly associated as girls’ game, it would only require jumping rope, and it’s good for any age brackets. It would start as an individual jump rope; later on it could be pair game competitions where double Dutch is performed. There would be exhibitions that can be included depending on the rules that you want to implement to make the game exciting which all girls love.

4. Kick the Can

It’s an exciting version and combination of hide & seek, and tag games wherein any used can be used as the primary object of the game. A person or even a group could be chosen as “it” wherein a can will be placed in the middle. The person or group who is chosen to be “it” will protect the can from the players of capturing or kicking it, otherwise, that group or individual will remain playing as “it”. However, if one has been captured, he or she will replace the person who is playing “it” and the game will continue until the non-it players are found in the holding pen.

3. Capture the Flag

You may need two flags for double excitement or just one flag that will be hold by “it” team. This game is played by two teams. Each team composes of certain number of players equal to the number of players on the other team. If you would decide to use two flags, the mechanics of the game is to ensure that you would get or steal the flag of the other team and bring it in your base to get the score. Hence, you may also catch a player from another team if ever they will spring up to your territory, and they will be put into your jail or territory. You can free a player or if jailbreak happens.

2. Big Foot Relay

You may bring old shoeboxes or any used cartoons that you could use to trace back a big foot. Cut a slit for about 4 inches on the top of the big feet where kids’ feet could sleep into it. Once it’s ready, then the race begins, until everyone in both teams are finished, then the team who finished the earliest, will be the winning team.

1. Hide and Seek 

This is an all-time favorite of not just kids, but the best family activity. It’s similar to tag game rules, but the only difference, the person who is playing “it” would have to close his or her eyes at the back of a tree or anything that he or she can close his or her eyes, while counting up to specific numbers. Once done counting, he or she would start finding the hiding place of all players, and when one is caught, the person who is playing “it” should make sure to go back to base where he did the counting, so that person will replace him or her to play the next “it”.
